Arab media threatened by new code

Al Jazeera has reported that most Arab states have endorsed a charter that would allow states to have more control over satellite broadcasting. That would include Al Jazeera’s channels.
All 22 members of the Arab League were in favor of the charter except Lebanon, which has a rich history in media, and Qatar, which is home to Al Jazeera.
The charter states that channels “should not damage social harmony, national unity, public order or traditional values.”
It gets a little stranger, though. The charter also says channels should “refrain from broadcasting anything which calls into question God, the monotheistic religions, the prophets, sects or symbols of the various religious communities”.
It says broadcasters should avoid “erotic or obscene material” and content that would “encourage smoking or the consumption of alcohol”.
Naturally, Al Jazeera is troubled by this charter. Qatar hasn’t signed it yet. Al Jazeera is sure hoping they won’t.
