Lebanese movie waxes nostalgic, Part II

For whatever reason, the entry on the Lebanese movie Caramel, set to start showing February 1 in some cities, was very popular.

Part of the curiosity was in the method of waxing. This particular way, called “sukkar” or “halawa” in Arabic, is common across the Middle East. Women can do it on their own, or like in the movie, they frequently go to salons where it can cost as little as $20 to have both legs done. That much money goes a long way for most people in the Middle East, but some lucky ladies can afford the pampering.

It’s a tradition across the Arab world for brides to go in for a pre-wedding pampering session, albeit a painful one. Rip. Ouch!

Another common method of hair removal in the Middle East, and also popular in India, is threading. This is great for shaping eyebrows and has caught on recently in the U.S., especially with more salons catering to particular ethnic communities.

Wax on, ladies.
